nearly three years apart. this video shows the moment they saw each other again for the first time since may and his dog were reassigned to different bases. we are joined now live by staff sgt may and the 8-year-old belgian mall mall who spent nine months with him in iraq. how is it going, patent houses reading going? >> is going good so far. obviously we just had thanksgiving together. he actually had some turkey and some ham as a retired boy. it has just been wonderful. he has been sleeping. going on walks and taken into the park without a wonderful time. >> u2 were assigned together for nine months in iraq. were you involved in training him or was he brought to you as an early train dog? >> so, he was already a trained dog. that military pre-trains that they get sent to ever base their

going too. i got sent to fort drone after during my training to be a military working dog handler. i got assigned him and that's where he met him. jon: u2 obviously clicked. you spent pretty much 24 hours a day together for those nine months, right? >> yes, sir. we spent day in day out to britt he slept with me. we woke up, took him on his morning walks every morning that we can get out and get his exercise. we did our training together during the day when we are not on shift. and then of course what you get towards night time we start to bed down and relax a little bit. jon: you bed down and relax but we've got a large belgian mall maw in your bed that is a twin size bed he kind of takes over the whole thing? >> he slept on top of me on most nights. and of course i'm rolling around and stuff you'll get off in the get right back on. he will wake me up but i did not

mind. i enjoyed it. jon: you two were inseparable for those nine months then why did the army decide to separate you? >> of course when it comes to reassignment, you get reassigned to a different base where i was going i am here like air force bases as an instructor now and we don't have dogs. plus we have or had a program work dogs or lab labeled to worf leash elect electronically through eco- it would not will not qualifyfor that either. so we did get reassigned somewhe else you get taken off the dog. jon: how did he do after you left? >> so in general the handle who had him before me said he has a separation anxiety so it was hard for me too leave when i got to fort drum. but with separation anxiety has some training deficiencies as

well they were not able to certify with him. he has been having caretakers he has been working or anything like that. he has not been certified for the past two and half years he has been sitting in an account been taken out on walks and stuff like that but he has not worked. jon: so it sounds like he kind of went into a funk after you left and was not able to do his job. >> one 100%, sir. jon: wow. tell us about some of things you did in iraq. what was his specialty? >> he was certified on being able to detect military grade explosives. some of our duties were pcp at the patrol point so any vehicle that come through it would go d search the vehicle for every vehicle that comes to within the shifts were working. and then what i when i worked te morning shift we would work outside of a post a little bit

and then go were all the vehicles coming through during the day we would search the lot and all the vehicles within that as well. while still in the army he is retired. what does he do now? >> is just a couch potato now he comes to work with me some days when i don't to teach the team. he'd sit in the office with me and be right on my hip. jon: he seems like a very happy dog now, would you say? >> yes he is very happy. ias a very happy boy. he has enjoyed it so far and been lazy. >> that reunion looks like a great moment for both of you. >> it was wonderful, sir for a very appreciative of american humane for getting him to me. he meant the world to me he really did. jon: i know you work with the american humane society to get reunited with that great dog of yours.
